Drexel Barber Shop Jam Sessions Schedule: Saturday afternoons

One of the more quaint musical venues in the Blue Ridge region is the tiny Drexel Barber Shop in the little town of Drexel. The shop features a very informal jam session. Around noontime‚ the guys at the barber shop generally put aside their scissors‚ shears‚ and combs and grab their instruments for a few hours of picking. They favor old-time‚ bluegrass‚ country‚ and western swing tunes. This event occurs year round on most‚ but not all‚ Saturday afternoons. Lawrence Anthony‚ the driving force behind the jam‚ passed away in December of 2009. Anthony’s son has set up a non-profit account to repair and keep the shop open for the music’s sake and as a memorial to Anthony. Donations to can be sent to the "Barber Shop Preservation Fund‚" c/o First Citizens Bank‚ Valdese‚ NC; taken to the barbershop; or sent to the Barber Shop Fund‚ 2744 Monarch Dr.‚ Charlotte‚ NC.

Directions: From Interstate 40 west‚ take exit 107. Turn right onto Highway 114 and travel approximately 3 miles. Cross 64/70 and travel another mile to the railroad. The Barber Shop will be on the left just before the railroad. There will be a red stripe down the middle of the building.
